Seizing the Moment

Pastor: Warren Boettcher Series: Acts: Mission Unstoppable Topic: Mission Passage: Acts 17:16–34

How do we tell the old, old story to a culture that loves the new?

Background

a. Paul didn't intend to go to Athens - he was sent there for his protection.

b. Athens had lost a lot of political power but was still a city of influence.

c. Paul is grieved by the idolatry he saw in the city.

Idolatry can come in many forms - when people create images of God in their minds - that's idolatry.

1. Paul has eyes opened to to the surrounding culture

vs. 16 - he saw the idols and was provoked. He discerned the culture, he didn't embrace it.

He uses his observations as a point of contact.

2. Paul spoke in ways they could understand

vs.22 - Paul takes a kind approach. He is engaging, not harshly blunt. In verse 28 he quotes some of their own poets (relating to them).

In vs. 24 he proclaims the God they didn't know. One God made all men from one - there is no ethnic superiority. God doesn't need us to serve Him, but we all need to be served by God. Jesus didn't come to be served, but to serve (gospel application).

The gospel isn't to be witnessed to in a "one size fits all". Paul altered his approach, but he didn't alter the message.

3. Paul trusted God with the results of his proclamation

vs 32-34 - some mocked, but others wanted to hear more and some believed.
